Certified Dental Assistant:
As of 2007, all new CDA's must now successfully write the NDAEB exam. Graduates of non-accredited schools also have to sit the clinical NDAEB examination to be eligible for registration and licensure in BC
Q. Where does the training for this program take place?
A. West Coast College has its own private dental training facility located in South Surrey. It offers both a 5 chair dental clinic, complete with radiographic training areas, dental laboratories, and full classroom facilities.
Q. Do I have to have Dental Assisting Level I to enroll in this program?
A. No.
Q. Once I complete this program do I need to sit any exams to be certified?
A. No you do not, students who graduate from our Certified Dental Assisting program do not need to write any further exams and are eligible to register to be Certified Dental Assistant!.
Medical Laboratory Assistant:
Q. Do you provide a practicum for your students?
A. Yes, all students that successfully complete the classroom portions of the Medical Laboratory Assistant program will have a practicum in the Lower Mainland provided by West Coast College.
Pharmacy Technician:
Q. Is there a demand for Pharmacy Technicians in the field?
A. Pharmacy Technicians are in high demand in both community and hospital pharmacies
Q. Are Pharmacy Technician graduates eligible to write certification exams?
A. Yes. Successful graduates are eligible to write both the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam (U.S.A.) and the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam (Alberta).
Q. Does West Coast College provide practicum's in Hospital Pharmacies
A. Yes, Hospital Practicum's are available for students meeting specified criteria. Since 1993 West Coast College students have been accepted into Hospital Pharmacies in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.
Q. Can West Coast College graduates work in Hospital Pharmacies?
A. Yes, many of our graduates are employed in Hospital Pharmacies in British Columbia. Often employers prefer students to have had some Community Pharmacy experience.
Resident Care Attendant:
Q. Is the Resident Care Attendant program transferable to the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program in BC?
A. Successful graduates of West Coast College's Resident Care Attendant program, AFTER completing 400 hours of employment as a Resident Care Attendant can apply to Vancouver Community College's Access to Practical Nursing program.
Veterinary Assistant:
Q. Does this program qualify you to work with animals or only in the reception office?
A. Yes, while our graduates are taught the skills needed to run a reception office at a veterinary clinic, the main focus of our program is to train a well-rounded veterinary assistant with the skills to assist the veterinarian in handling animals during procedures.
Q. What kind of work experience is provided during this program?
A. In addition to the minimum 20 hours of job shadowing or volunteer work in a related field that is an admission requirement to the program, there is an S.P.C.A. Preceptorship and a 4 week practicum in a veterinary clinic provided by West Coast College.
Community Support / Justice Worker:
Q. What kinds of work does this program prepare you for?
A. The Community Support / Justice Worker program prepares you to work in a variety of positions in service sectors with high risk youth and families, seniors, immigrant services, women, persons with disabilities, addictions, harm reduction, your and adult justice services. Placements include work at a variety of private and non-profit agencies, such as: Touchstone Family Services, Family Services of Greater Vancouver, and Tin Harbour.
Q. What kind of work experience is provided during the program?
A. There is an opportunity for students to complete a minimum of three information interviews across different sectors during the program; this is followed by a five-week practicum placement in the community that supports students to work in their respective fields.
Q. Will the college provide the necessary requirements to meet accreditation guidelines?
A. Yes, the program meets all accreditation standards for CARF / COA.
Q. What experience and expertise do the instructors bring to the program?
A. Our instructors are multi-faceted and possess the instructional credentials to teach and the knowledge, skills and abilities in the field.

A. Examples of previous work placements include: Community Visions - CSW, Touchstone Family Services - Child & Youth Care Counselor, John Howard Society - Community Justice Worker, and Tin Harbour - Supervised visits.
